Kofi, The Ideator and Innovator

What You’ll Practice

  • Plan a layout that meets a list of requirements
  • Measure and calculate distances on a grid
  • Evaluate a design for access and inclusion

What You’ll Need

  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Colored pencils

Section 1

Plan Your Neighborhood

Each grid square = 100 meters. Draw and label every required element.

Place all five required elements on the grid.

1 square = 100 meters

Required elements

  • Homes
  • Park or green space
  • School or learning space
  • Transportation path
  • Community space

Measure it

  • How far is the school from the homes? (squares × 100 m)
  • How far is the park from the community space?
  • What is the longest trip anyone has to make?

Section 2

Systems Check

Check each system your plan includes.

  • Clean energy source
  • Safe walking or rolling paths
  • Ramps and step-free routes
  • Shade, water or rest spots
  • A way to get around without a car

Section 3

Everyone Belongs

How does my design help everyone belong here?

One thing I would change if the city grew twice as big:

Parent & Teacher Note

Ask who would find this neighborhood hard to move through: a person using a wheelchair, a grandparent, a young child. Great planners design for everyone.
