Zion's Discovery Isles Map Mission

Read a grid map of the Discovery Isles, use the legend, follow five direction clues, and tell the difference between an observation and a guess.

Zion, The Explorer

What You’ll Practice

  • Use a legend to read map symbols
  • Navigate a grid using north, south, east and west
  • Separate what you observed from what you assumed

What You’ll Need

  • Pencil
  • Colored pencils

Section 1

The Island Grid

Start at the Compass Tower. Follow each clue and mark where you land.

Label north, south, east and west on the edges

Legend

  • Triangle = Map Tower
  • Circle = Waterfall
  • Square = Hidden Cave
  • Star = Observation Deck
  • Diamond = Floating Island
  1. 1Move 2 squares east from the Compass Tower.
  2. 2Move 1 square north. What symbol is here?
  3. 3Move 3 squares west and mark an X.
  4. 4Move 2 squares south. Which landmark is closest?
  5. 5Draw your own new landmark anywhere and add it to the legend.

Section 2

Which Way?

Label the four directions on the map: north, south, east, west. Then write which direction the waterfall is from the cave.

Section 3

Observation or Guess?

Check only the sentences that are observations: things you can actually see.

  • There are three trees on the island.
  • The cave is probably scary inside.
  • The waterfall is east of the tower.
  • Nobody has ever visited this deck.
  • The path is shorter than the bridge.

How can an explorer check a guess?

Parent & Teacher Note

The last challenge is the big one. Explorers say “I see” before they say “I think.” Praise them for noticing the difference, not for getting the right island.
